Sure you could buy a new electric skateboard, but what if you already have your own skateboards that you just want to soup up and give some serious speed? Enter the Mellow Drive.
Currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter, the Mellow Drive is a battery-powered electric-drive motor that mounts onto the underside of virtually any skateboard.
With the Mellow Drive, riders will be able to cruise at up to 25 miles per hour. The swappable battery snaps into the Drive and has a range of 10 miles. Mellow Boards, the company behind the invention, says the battery is good for up to 1,000 charges. The battery even doubles as a battery pack for charging up your gadgets via USB.
A remote control lets you maneuver with your newly motorized skateboard. Simply push the remote’s slide mechanism and the board will accelerate, and pull it to switch on the braking system.
The Mellow Drive sounds like a great way to breathe new life into an old skate deck, but it’s on the pricey side. Early bird specials include the Mellow Drive, remote and charger for €850 (about $950). A separate early bird special with a Mellow Drive and a board goes for €999 (about $1,115).
For the same amount of money, you could probably buy an entire electric skateboard. Still, if the idea of modding your board excites you, you can make a pledge on Kickstarter.
At the time of this writing, the Mellow Drive has raised over $5,900. Mellow Boards hopes to raise $111,589 to start producing the electric drive add-on. Deliveries are expected in May 2016.
