The spirit of 5Pointz, the former graffiti mecca in Long Island City that was whitewashed two months ago, is being kept alive at a new exhibit called “Wall Works” at the Gold Coast Art Center in Great Neck.

In putting together the exhibit, which opened Jan. 19 and will run until March 2, gallery director Jude Amsel said she wants to remove the taboo that is attached to graffiti art.

“I want [visitors] to see that these are accepted artists,” she said.

5Pointz, formerly an abandoned apartment building, stood as an empty canvas for graffiti artists to display their work.

The outdoor museum got its name because it “signifies the five boroughs coming together as one,” according to its website.

Father and son developers Jerry and David Wolkoff of GM Realty, owners of the 5Pointz building, recently decided to tear the building down and put up two luxury apartment buildings.

In the process, the building was whitewashed overnight, erasing the artwork of hundreds of artists from around New York and the world.

Amsel, a resident of Long Island City, has worked with many of the 5Pointz artists in the past and lives in the same apartment building as some, including 5Pointz gallery curator Jonathan “Meres One” Cohen.

Cohen echoed Amsel’s comments in hoping that visitors see the legitimacy of graffiti art.

“I want them to leave not having the negative perception of what graffiti art is,” Cohen said.

The exhibit features original work from many of the 5Pointz artists including Cohen, Kid Lew, Zimad, See TF and Shiro.

The exhibit also features a mural of the Gold Coast Art Center, which was created by Cohen and Zimad.

Amsel said the mural will be a permanent fixture of the center.

Remembering the two-month anniversary of the whitewashing, Cohen said the exhibit was a way for him to ease the pain of that day.

“It’s good to bring some positiveness from the stain in my brain,” he said.

The Gold Coast Art Center, formerly known as the Great Neck Arts Center, is located at 113 Middle Neck Road and is open Mon.- Fri.: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sat. – Sun.: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Steven Blank, publisher and owner of Blank Slate Media, is a board member of the Gold Coast Art Center.
