Two arrested in skateboard attack

Two men arrested early Sunday morning are accused of attacking a man with their skateboards near Pacific and Walnut avenues.

The victim was walking with his wife about 1:45 a.m. when one of the suspects made a derogatory comment about his wife, Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark said.

After they exchanged words, the two men used their skateboards to knock the man to the ground. The attackers fled to the top floor of a parking garage near Cedar and Church streets, Clark said.

The victim suffered a head injury but said he would seek his own medical treatment.

Authorities found Dennis James Wells, 20, of Soquel, and Daniel Araujo, 29, of Capitola, minutes after the attack. Both were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Clark said.

Araujo was not in Santa Cruz County Jail on Monday but Wells remained in jail in lieu of $25,000 bail, according to jail records.
