A 15-year-old boy injured when he was struck by a vehicle while skateboarding along with his 13-year-old cousin in Echo Park was declared brain dead Sunday afternoon, a spokeswoman at the hospital where he was being treated said.
The family of Christian Donis was at his bedside at County-USC Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Rosa Saca told City News Service.
Christian and his cousin Adam, identified in news reports, were struck about 10 p.m. Friday as they crossed westbound in an unmarked crosswalk on Alvarado Street at the intersection of Montrose Street, according to Sgt. Jesse Garcia of the Los Angeles Police Department‘s Central Traffic Division.
Christian was in critical condition when taken to a hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, police said.
His cousin sustained minor injuries and was in stable condition after being taken to a hospital by family members, according to the LAPD.
Police had been looking for a white, late-model Toyota Venza compact SUV and took the suspected driver, a 28-year-old man from Tujunga, into custody on Saturday, according to the West Traffic Division, which worked with the LAPD’s Olympic Station in identifying and arresting the suspect.
One of the boys tried to pull the other back before both were struck and the crash broke one of their skateboards in half, according to reports from the scene.
