Abandoned Jersey City Pep Boys shop transformed into graffiti paradise – New York’s PIX11 / WPIX

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Amid the big box retailers and luxury condos that make up most of the real estate along Marin Boulevard in Jersey City, lies a piece of property that’s turning heads.

What was once a Pep Boys Auto shop that went out of business is now a so-called “mecca of graffiti.”

Spray-painted works from 100 artists from the area cover every inch of the 30-thousand square foot space – both inside and out.

“It’s an immersive unique experience,” Gregory Edgell, the founder of Jersey City-based Green Villain. Edgell and his team are responsible for bringing the public exhibition called Demolition Exhibition to the site in hopes of enlightening.

“The education of the widespread population to know that graffiti isn’t just vandalism and that this can boost morale and community engagement, that was the goal,” Edgell explained.

The colorful exhibit took visitors like Alyssa Austern aback.

“I think it’s all very impressive. Like everything that I’ve seen – I can’t even imagine the time that has gone into it,” she told PIX11 News. “It’s like perfect.”

Even though it took well over a month to produce, it will be open to the public for just a few days and then ultimately torn down to make way for a 35-story tower.

Thanks to a partnership with Google, the works of art will be preserved for the masses to enjoy online forever.

“We’ve done as much as we can to take advantage of technology that we have access to,” Edgell said. “To capture the process, so people in the future could experience it.”

Demolition Exhibition is located at 410 Marin Blvd. in Jersey City and will be open everyday starting at 12 p.m., to 8 p.m., until July 5th.
